An outgoing state senator — and a high school teacher — are joining forces to ensure more money is spent in Vermont classrooms. Senator Wendy Wilton and Curtis Hier have formed the group First Class Education for Vermont. Their goal — to keep administrative costs in check — and send more money into the classrooms. They say many school districts are only spending 60 percent of education dollars on direct classroom costs. Their goal is to increase that to 65 percent.

Wilton: (( Vermont is one of the top five per-pupil spending states in the nation, yet, in some schools, students do not have current textbooks or technology. In others, teacher pay has not kept pace with neighboring districts, making it harder to retain good teachers. Most Vermonters feel we are spending enough on education, and I believe those same Vermonters want our tax dollars to be spent wisely — with a focus on benefiting students.))
